I received this Sky Burial disc quite some time ago, so I'm hoping that
it isn't out of print. Sky Burial is the "ambient" project of
Michael Page, better know for his PE work under the Fire In The Head Moniker.
I put the word ambient in quotations because while it is certainly not
as aggressive and abrasive as F/I/T/H, it is not your usual ambient background
music either.
This disc has 6 tracks stretched over 46 minutes, and the end result
is rather tasty. Each track here is unique unto itself. The first track
is kind of what I imagine it would be like to enter a very cold alternate
computer driven universe, with cold swirling choppy drones building up
to heavy pounding martial drums. The second track is in more of an ambient
vein, albeit a very dark and sad one that sounds like some kind of manipulated
strings instrument. The third track sounds like some evil carnival put
through a blender with odd organs and gerally festive sounds turned horribly
and enjoyable wrong. The fourth track is pure ambient blist with great
drones and a very march-heavy beat. The fifth track is an extremely cold
and glitchy ambient piece that starts off very dark but progresses to
some lighter pads and sweeps, as well as a few odd trumpet sounds. The
sixth and final track is a skip heavy glitch melody that blooms into more
of a kind of chefkirkish jam with dark ambient creepieness thrown in.
All in all this is a very original and diverse album, and hopefully Mr.
Page decided to show us this side of himself again in the not so distant
future. Recommended for sure.
